Enhancing writing skills in poetry

Poetry has several things to think about before it is written. This follows that for a quality work to come out you need to add up or organize all elements of poetry. A poem that is not written well is hard to be appreciated. Down here are some of the points to think about as you are writing your poem.

For a start, it is very much important to generate a surge of thoughts. Poetry is based on emotions. Emotions are what make a poem. Build emotions that are relevant to the story that you want to write. Note that the story has the beginning, middle and ending. So poetry too uses that. Despite that poetry is written in verse form, and in brief. Still on the same issue, while you begin writing, write down all words and phrases that come to your mind as quickly as you can. Thus poetry.

Secondly, have an extensive research on existing literature regarding poetry. This is the basis of poetry. Take some poems from already existing books to guide your ways of success. For example how to develop tone or texture of your poem.. etc, you can emulate the styles from them.

Thirdly, think about yourself and poetry and the kind of poem or message you want to convey to the audience or readers. For instance, it can be of love, hate, adventure etc. also select the audience. The type of target audience will determine the choice of words in your poem.

Having done that now you can think of the structure of your poem: how you would like to arrange your words in the poem. Therefore choose the right structure of your poem that you are writing.

Another step is to decide which type of poems you want to write. There are many kinds of poem just as follows: sonnet (which has 14 lines), blank verse, sestina, ballad and poetry prompts, limericks, haiku etc. Though poetry is made of emotions, try to visualise which type of the poem you are writing and has to be put in the actual category. In this you should also think of the style

To make your poem more enjoyable add concrete imagery and possibly some vivid descriptions. In this section apply the technique of five senses: Sense of touch, hearing, taste, sight and smell. Besides, you can aswell use poetic devices. These will possibly add something to the meaning and landscape of your poem. If these are applied they can turn around the following.
1) Suspense of your poem story
2) Foster its meaning
3) Create cohesive events
4) Add the skyline or beauty of the story
These poetic devices are rhyme, metaphors or symbols, assonance, alliteration and repetition, but don’t over use rhyme for it’s a crime. You should include examples too.

The final step is how to finish up your work, the ending. You have developed the idea, explained it and now resist the urge to explain it. Allow the reader or listener to become engaged with the poem in developing and understanding of your experience or message. Develop a good insight of the conveyed message in the poem. Please turn your emotions into something else, something that is beautiful in the ending.

Having done with that look at your poem again, revisit it several times and remove or replace unnecessary words with nice imagery and metaphor. You can do that by
1) Listening to your poem(read out)
2) Editing
3) Sharing your work with other poets and seek comments from them.

Thus how poets do with poetry. We kill many birds with one stone in a single tree. We hit them without missing the target, such is a poet of legacy in the motherland.

Figurative Language and Poetry

For poetry to exist there are alot to be added together to form one meaningful thing. In this edition we are going to look at figurative language, specifically on symbols, how it shifts the meaning of motion pictures and sounds of poetry. That is why poetry is deep, and needs a far fetched meaning.

Let’s start with Symbol as a figurative language used in poetry.

To get it right we need to have an extensive research over it. Let’s go into Longman Concise English dictionary. Symbol is
(1) Something that stands for or suggests something else by reason of association, convention, e.t.c
(2) a sign used in writing or printing to represent operations, qualities, elements, relations, or qualities in aparticular field (e.g. Chemestry or music)

Just to add on those meanings, poetry often times uses such qualities or elements to paint a picture it may stand for A sign, token etc to represent a huge chunk of stories.
Poets use symbols because they are considered to be part of semnic indirection as they convey deeper meanings.

Symbol is something in the world of senses, including an action, that manifests (reveal) or signifies (is a sign for or a pointer to) a thing, or numinous

Samuel John(1755) termed it “A type; that which comprehends in its figure a representation of something else” A word denotes, refers to, or labels something in the world, but a symbol, as athing in the world (to which a word, of course, may point) has a concreteness not shared by language and points to something often what transecends ordinary exprience. Any tree, for example, arguably symbolises treeness, a plantonic form. Any image or action termed a Jungian archetype is also Symbolic in that it manifests something in the collective unconscious of human beings.

Writers often use symbols when they believe in a transcendental reality. A metaphor compare two or more things that are no more and no less reall than anything else in the world. For a metaphor to be symbolic, one of its pair of elements must manifest or reveal yet something else transcendental.

Cleanth brooks and Robert Penn Warren in Understanding poetry (3rd edition; 1960), however, say that the symbol may be regarded as a metaphor from which the first term has been emitted(556)

An object or action that means more than it’s lateral meaning. For example, the cross symbolizes Christianity, and the rose is a symbol of love. Here are examples
-there are perfumes that fresh
like child’s flesh
sweet like oboes, green like
mea dows
-And others, corrupt, rich, and
Having the expansiveness of infinite things
Like amber, music, benzoin, and incense, which sing of the rapture of the soul and senses
-“I want to drink poisons, to lose myself in mists, in dream!”

Using symbols in poetry saves time and resources. For brevity is achieved with ease.

Just to sum up everything, A symbol May be roughly defined as something that means more than what it is and something more too. It is like an image, or metaphor for they shade into each other and sometimes difficult to distinguish.

Once again be a poet to dance on; leave a legacy, a long legacy in simple terms- thus symbol. Symbolise your art of poetry!!

Our Mantle, our poetry world

Our world is a foolish thing. It needs our art to prevail and walk over it, smear it down and emit magma gas. This is humour beneath crustal plates!!! Thus it moves on our mantle, our poetry world!

How to make some good reads?
There is alot to be done for a reader to appreciate your work. As such you need to stand firm with your pace to make good reads.

At this point in time I am talking about the organised work that you have done so far- the manuscript!!!!?

Writing materials and your manuscript should be around and near. Some of these materials are pencil, pen and eraser. The emphasis of having the manuscript with you is that you should be seing and feeling the weakness in your writing and compare with the other poets work. This will improve and maintain the quality of your poems. Never just copy!!

Secondly, a dictionary and relavant books are powerful resources. These will have two or more roles to play.
(a) is to guide you how to pronounce a word and observe the accented part of it which is a musical instrument in poetry.
(b) it will give you the meaning of some words that you do not know e.g. Phrasal verbs, idioms e.t.c and select proper ingredients that have been put in the poem at hand

Write down all difficult words and look up them in the mentioned books above. You can also write some pleasing verses or stanzas identified in such poetical works.

As you read make sure that the place is neat, clean, well ventilated and lit. Use hard seats to avoid sleeping during the process or losing interests of reading and concentration. Really make a good read!!

In the process, select good poems from your manuscript, and write your book(s) and finally display them to the audience. Know that your art and you are important in the inner world of their souls.

So poetry is an amazing thing too. This is how you would kill the star by your head. This is how humour and entertainments shall cough out of your hands. Those hands of the creator are our everyday smile.
